Safe Medication Disposal
Dispose of unused or expired medications promptly and safely.
Whenever possible, use an authorized medication take-back location or mail-back program.
If a take-back option is not readily available, follow the medication’s disposal instructions or FDA guidance. Most medications may be placed in the household trash after mixing them with an undesirable substance such as used coffee grounds, dirt, or cat litter and sealing them in a container. Remove or obscure personal information from prescription labels before disposal.
Do not flush medications unless they are specifically included on the FDA Flush List.
